Engaging with Uncertainty and Risk in European Agricultural Biotechnology

Presented by Dr. Michele Mastroeni, ESRC Innogen Centre Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh and Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy

Michele Mastroeni will be discussing risk perception and risk management in European treatment of genetically modified crops. The discussion is based on a project being conducted by the ESRC Innogen Centre with Syngenta, and Syngenta's experience in moving two GM crops through the European Food Safety Authority's process. The discussion will outline Syngenta's perception of a risk assessment policy gap (i.e. that the policies in place in Europe do not specify the kind of risk or data needed by policymakers to approve a crop for cultivation); and it will present some very preliminary findings from the case studies.
